Chillers – what are they and what are they used for?

Posted on

Chillers are used to transfer undesired heat energy into the atmosphere during manufacturing and other industrial processes.

They are commonly seen in the automotive, food and drink, plastics, chemical, pharmaceutical and medical industries, among others, and are utilised for a variety of applications, including:

  • Biogas and natural gas treatment
  • Compressed air treatment
  • Extrusion
  • Injection moulding
  • Laser cutting/marking
  • Plasma coating
  • Printing
  • Machine tooling
  • Welding

The best chillers provide a precise and accurate control of the process fluid temperature. They work on the principle that a heated liquid vaporises into gas.

There are two types of chiller – vapour-compression and absorption – both of which contain a liquid refrigerant or cooling fluid. Vapour-compression chillers use compressors to drive the refrigerant around the system, while absorption chillers use a heat source.

The cleanliness of the cooling fluid is paramount – whether water, water-glycol mix or low-viscosity fluid. The benefits of high-quality cooling fluid include:

  • Better efficiency in the process
  • Higher productivity
  • Reduced maintenance costs
  • Reduced downtime

The best chillers undergo extensive testing before installation, so that they operate as efficiently and reliably as possible, whatever the process.

Products like the Parker Hiross Hyperchill Plus industrial water chillers offer precision cooling to ensure stable working conditions, all in a compact and easy-to-install design. This range features a non-ferrous hydraulic circuit to prevent water from becoming corrosive and condenser filters to reduce dirt. There’s a differential pressure switch, which will shut down the system if the circuit runs dry and the chillers are designed to operate even in extreme conditions.

A number of accessories are available, which add flexibility and allow the chiller to meet the requirements of a wide range of industrial applications. These accessories include water filters to protect machinery, non-ferrous water fill kits, non-ferrous water bypass to allow the setting of the correct flow, and remote control kits for remote monitoring.
